Being Straightforward

You may have heard the phrase, “I am a straightforward person”, before.

To some, these words represent permission to communicate in any way they consider to be correct. Regardless of the possibility that their words & responses could seriously harm the people they interact with.

Perceptions that are rude, judgmental, hurtful and even untrue enter our conversations and thoughts when we believe we must give voice to our feelings without checking them.

All in the name of being (allegedly) frank & honest.

More often than not, it is the claim of being a straightforward person that is used as justification to speak one’s mind without concern for the implications.

There’s always a kinder way to be honest. A more subtle way to be straightforward. And definitely, a need for honest, thoughtful communication build around concern for those around us.
